Yuexiu Park sits on Jiefang North Road in Guangzhou's Yuexiu District and takes its name from Yuexiu Hill. It is the city's largest comprehensive park and marks Guangzhou's official city origin point. Its sights include the Five Rams statue, Zhenhai Tower (the Guangzhou Museum), the Ming dynasty city wall and the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Monument. The 11-m Five Rams statue is the emblem of Guangzhou: five goats in different poses retell the ancient legend of five rams carrying grain stalks, a symbol of the city's prosperity and good fortune. Thickly wooded and fresh-aired, the park draws about 30,000 visitors a day for exercise and leisure.
Zhenhai Tower stands atop the Ming dynasty wall on Yuexiu Hill, one of the oldest surviving gate towers in Guangzhou. Built in 1380, the 13th year of the Hongwu reign, the 28-m tower carries five tiers of flying eaves hung with wind bells that chime when the breeze picks up — hence its name, the 'Sea-Calming Tower'. It now houses the Guangzhou Museum, tracing the city's development through treasured artifacts. The park also holds the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Monument and the Sifang Fort ruins, key sites for understanding Guangzhou's modern history.
Suggested route: start at the Five Rams statue, then take in Zhenhai Tower, the Ming city wall and the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Monument before descending by the Hundred-Step Staircase. Dense foliage keeps the park cool in summer, a fine escape from the heat. Come early in the morning to watch locals at their exercises and catch the everyday rhythm of old Guangzhou. The Museum of the Nanyue King is a short walk away, about 500 m from the park.
Take Metro Line 2 to Yuexiu Park Station, Exit A or B, and walk about 5 minutes. Buses 5, 7, 21, 24, 33, 58, 61 and 101 stop at Yuexiu Park. From Guangzhou East Station, ride Line 1 to Gongyuanqian and transfer to Line 2 — about 20 minutes.
The park itself is free. Zhenhai Tower (Guangzhou Museum) is ticketed separately at CNY 10 per person.
On the summit of Little Yuexiu Hill (also called Guanyin Hill) inside the park — about 10 minutes up the path from the east gate.
