Shamian Church stands on South Street of Guangzhou's Shamian Island, a Catholic church raised by French missionaries in 1890 during the concession era and named for Our Lady of Lourdes. Gothic in style, its two spires rise conspicuously above the low European buildings around it. Inside are vaulted ceilings and stained-glass windows depicting biblical scenes, sunlight throwing brilliant colored patterns across the nave. The church covers about 840 sq m with some 400 sq m of floor space — modest in scale but of high artistic value.
This is one of the most important church buildings to survive from Guangzhou's concession era and the most representative European structure on the island. A systematic restoration in the 1990s returned it to its historic appearance. Catholic Mass is still celebrated every Sunday, open to worshippers and visitors alike. Ancient trees line the nearby streets and European lamp posts set off the church handsomely, making it one of Guangzhou's most romantic photo stops and a favorite setting for wedding portraits.
Plan your visit: the church is small — about 30 minutes suffices. Come outside Mass times to admire the stained glass and the Gothic interior up close; during the Sunday Masses (08:00 and 10:00) you can feel the religious atmosphere, but keep quiet. Shamian Island itself merits 2-3 hours, with the church an essential stop. The Guangdong Museum of Foreign Affairs and the former British consulate on the island pair well.
Guangzhou Metro Line 1 or 6 to Huangsha, Exit F, then about 10 minutes on foot over the Renmin Bridge approach to South Street, Shamian Island. Buses 1, 9, 25 and 57 to Huangsha terminus, then about 8 minutes on foot.
Yes. Outside Mass times the church is open to visitors — keep quiet and no flash. During the Sunday Masses (08:00 and 10:00), wait until the service ends.
