What to expect
Baiyun Mountain stands in Guangzhou's Baiyun District, a southern outlier of the Jiulian range and one of the city's classic scenic spots since ancient times. The slopes tilt from northeast to southwest; the main summit, Moxing Ridge, reaches 382 m, its dense woods and murmuring streams often veiled by cloud gathering mid-slope — hence the name White Cloud Mountain. The scenic area covers roughly 28 sq km, divided into Luhu Lake, Feieling, Santailing, Mingchun Valley, Moxing Ridge and other zones where natural and cultural sights share billing. The summit square is the finest lookout over Guangzhou: on clear days you can make out the Pearl River and Canton Tower in the distance.
Baiyun Mountain has a long history as a celebrated destination in Lingnan. Historic relics dot the slopes, among them Yunyan (said to be where Zheng Anqi, an alchemist of the Qin era, lived in seclusion gathering herbs), Nine Dragons Spring, Nengren Temple and Dishui Rock. At the top of Moxing Ridge stands the Guangzhou Stele Forest, a collection of poems and inscriptions about the mountain carved by famous figures through the ages. The mountain is also an ecological shield for the city: forest coverage exceeds 95%, negative-ion counts in the air are extremely high, and it is the first choice for residents' exercise and leisure.
Practical notes: several paths climb the mountain, but the classic route starts at the south gate (Yuntai Garden) and takes 2-2.5 hours to Moxing Ridge on good paths lined with sights. If energy is short, take the sightseeing shuttle to Mingzhu (Pearl) Tower and continue on foot or by cableway. Near Mingzhu Tower the Sante Extreme Sports Centre offers bungee jumping and the luge-style slide. Snacks and drinks at the summit square cost two to three times street prices — bring your own water.
How to get there
Buses 24, 63, 285 and 298 to Baiyun Mountain South Gate (Yuntai Garden). From Metro Line 3 Meihuayuan Station Exit B, bus 66 takes about 15 minutes. From Metro Line 2 Baiyun Park Station Exit C, take bus 76A or Tourism Line 1. From Guangzhou East railway station, allow about 45 minutes by metro and connecting bus.
