Putuoshan Island (普陀山, Pǔtuó Shān)
"Putuoshan is one of China's four sacred Buddhist mountains — but it sits on a small island in the East China Sea, not a mountain range. Dedicated to Guanyin (观音), the bodhisattva of compassion, it has been a pilgrimage destination since the Tang Dynasty (9th century). The island has 3 major temples — Puji (普济寺), Fayu (法雨寺), and Huiji (慧济寺) — plus a 33-meter golden statue of Guanyin at the southern tip. Despite being only 12.5 km², it handles over 10 million visitors annually. I went on a weekday in May and was surprised by how peaceful the temple courtyards are, given the ferry crowds — the incense smoke, the sound of chanting, and the sea breeze create a genuinely meditative atmosphere.".

What to expect
Putuoshan became a Guanyin pilgrimage site after a Japanese monk, attempting to take a Guanyin statue to Japan in 863 AD, was stopped by a storm. He interpreted this as Guanyin refusing to leave China and built a shrine on the island. By the Song Dynasty, it was recognized as Guanyin's bodhimanda (道场, sacred abode).
The island's three major temples each have a distinct character: Puji Temple (普济寺, built 916 AD) is the largest and oldest, with a 8.8-meter Guanyin statue in the main hall. Fayu Temple (法雨寺, built 1580) climbs a hillside in ascending halls with a famous Nine-Dragon Screen (九龙壁). Huiji Temple (慧济寺, built 1793) sits on Foding Peak (佛顶山, 291 m) — reachable by cable car or a 1,068-step stone staircase.
The 33-meter Guanyin statue at the southern tip was completed in 1997. She stands on a lotus platform facing the sea, holding a vase of pure water. During festivals, thousands of pilgrims circumambulate the statue chanting sutras, a genuinely moving sight even for non-Buddhists.
How to get there
From Hangzhou: HSR to Ningbo (¥70, 1 hour), bus to Zhoushan Putuo Bus Station (¥60, 1.5 hours), taxi to Shenjiamen Wharf (¥15), ferry (¥160 round-trip, 15 min). Total: 4–5 hours, ¥300+. From Shanghai: direct bus + ferry combo from Shanghai South Bus Station (¥200, 4.5 hours). Book ferry via the Zhoushan Ferry WeChat mini-program.
Best photo spots
- The 33 m Guanyin statue from the sea-facing approach — golden against the sky
- Puji Temple's lotus pond and curved bridge — especially beautiful when lotuses bloom (June–August)
- Foding Peak looking down over the island — sea on all sides
- Fayu Temple's Nine-Dragon Screen — rare glazed-tile mural from the Qing Dynasty
Tips
- Go on a weekday — weekends bring domestic tourist crowds that transform the island
- Visit Puji Temple at 5:00 AM for morning chanting — open to respectful visitors
- Wear comfortable shoes — the island is car-free and you will walk between temples (20–40 min apart)
- Stay overnight on the island if you can — after the last ferry at 21:30, it is peaceful and atmospheric
- Vegetarian meals at the temples (¥10–20) are simple but authentic — Fayu Temple has the best reputation
Scams to avoid
- "Monks" outside temples offering to bless your prayer beads for ¥200 — real monks bless items during ceremonies, not as street transactions
- Overpriced incense at ferry terminal shops (¥100+) — temples sell basic incense for ¥5–10
- Unofficial "guides" at the ferry wharf who claim you need them for temple access — all temples are open to ticket holders
Frequently asked questions
How do I get to Putuoshan from Hangzhou?
HSR Hangzhou East to Ningbo (¥70, 1 hour), then bus to Zhoushan (¥60, 1.5 hours), taxi to Shenjiamen Wharf (¥15), ferry (¥160 round-trip, 15 min). Total 4–5 hours. Start early — leave Hangzhou by 7:00 AM to arrive on the island by noon.
Is Putuoshan worth visiting if I'm not Buddhist?
Yes — the coastal setting, temple architecture, and cultural atmosphere are compelling regardless of religious interest. The 33 m Guanyin statue is impressive. The island is car-free and scenic. For photographers and culture travelers, it offers more atmosphere than many mainland temple sites.
Can I stay overnight on Putuoshan?
Yes — there are hotels from ¥200/night (basic guesthouse) to ¥800 (boutique). Temple guesthouses (¥100–200) are available at Puji and Fayu temples — book through the temple office, not online. Staying overnight lets you experience evening chanting and the island after day-trippers leave.
When is Guanyin's birthday?
The 19th day of the 2nd, 6th, and 9th lunar months (usually March, July, and October in the Gregorian calendar). These are the busiest days of the year — tens of thousands of pilgrims. Temples are packed, ferry queues can be 3+ hours, and accommodation on the island sells out weeks ahead. Avoid these dates unless you are a pilgrim.
Is Putuoshan wheelchair accessible?
Partially — Puji Temple and the Guanyin statue area have ramps. Fayu Temple has stairs between halls. Huiji Temple requires cable car or stairs climb. The island bus system (¥5–10 per ride) connects major sites but gets crowded. About 50% of major sites are accessible.
What should I wear?
Modest dress — shoulders and knees covered, especially inside temple halls. Comfortable walking shoes (you will walk 8–15 km over a full day). Remove hats inside temples. No shorts in the main halls (temple staff may refuse entry).
Should I visit Putuoshan from Shanghai or Hangzhou?
From Shanghai there is a direct bus + ferry combo (4.5 hours, ¥200) — logistically simpler. From Hangzhou, it is 4–5 hours with transfers. If you are already in Hangzhou, it is worth the effort. From Shanghai, it is an easy overnight trip.
How is Putuoshan different from other Buddhist mountains?
Unlike Mount Wutai (mountain), Mount Emei (mountain), or Mount Jiuhua (mountain), Putuoshan is an island — the sea setting makes it unique. It is also the smallest of the four (12.5 km²) and the most accessible — no mountain climbing required. The Guanyin devotion here has a gentler, more compassionate feel than the wisdom-focused Manjusri worship at Mount Wutai.
