What to expect

Qibao Old Street, the heart of the town, runs about 800 m and is lined with shops selling traditional handicrafts and local snacks. The signature Qibao tangyuan (glutinous rice balls) have thin skins and generous fillings that burst with broth; Haitang cake, sugar painting and zongzi round out the classic Shanghai snack lineup.

The Qibao Jiao Temple inside the town is an important historic site that still draws worshippers. Small museums such as the Zhou family micro-carving museum display traditional crafts. As the closest Jiangnan water town to central Shanghai, Qibao suits an easy half-day weekend trip.

How to get there

Metro Line 9 to Qibao station, Exit 2, then a 15-minute walk along Qixin Road to the old town

Best photo spots

  • The three bridges (Puhuitang, Jingye, Anping)
  • The old street at night
  • Canal reflections

Tips

  • Come in the afternoon — tour the old street, stay for dinner and the night view
  • Snacks are made for eating as you walk
  • Crowds swell on holidays — best avoided if you can
  • Pack stomach medicine if you plan to graze through the snack stalls

Scams to avoid

  • Watch for wildly overpriced snacks
  • Don't pay "authentic" stalls that pad the price
