What to expect
The Panda Base sits on gently sloping land in the northern suburbs of Chengdu, planted with bamboo groves and native forest that mirror the pandas' natural habitat. The design is intentionally anti-zoo: wide paths, naturalistic enclosures, and dense vegetation give the pandas space and give visitors the sense of walking through a bamboo forest where pandas happen to live.
The nursery is the emotional highlight — newborn cubs (pink, hairless, about the size of a stick of butter) are visible through glass from August through December. By 10:00 AM, most adult pandas are asleep in trees with limbs dangling, and the morning magic is over. The red panda area (separate, smaller animals, equally charming) is less crowded and worth seeking out.
The base also houses the Giant Panda Museum (included in ticket) which explains the breeding program and the existential challenge of panda conservation: giant pandas have a single 24–72 hour fertility window per year and often show zero interest in mating, which is why the base's artificial insemination program has been critical to the species' survival.
How to get there
Metro Line 3 to Panda Avenue (熊猫大道) station, Exit A. From the exit, the park shuttle bus (¥5) leaves every 15 minutes, or take a DiDi (¥10–15, 10 minutes). From central Chengdu hotels near Tianfu Square, allow 45 minutes total.

Can I hold a baby panda?
No — panda holding for tourists was permanently banned in 2019. You can see cubs through glass in the nursery (August–December) but there is no physical contact. Any tour operator claiming otherwise is lying. The ban protects pandas from disease transmission and stress.

Is the Panda Base better than the Dujiangyan Panda Base?
Chengdu Base: more pandas, better museum, easier to reach (metro), more crowded. Dujiangyan Base (1.5h from Chengdu): fewer pandas but volunteer programs available (¥700+), more natural setting, fewer crowds. For first-timers, Chengdu Base is the right choice. For panda enthusiasts, Dujiangyan offers a more intimate experience.
Can I visit the Panda Base and Leshan Giant Buddha in one day?
No — the Panda Base takes 3–4 hours (essentially a morning), and Leshan is 1.5–2 hours away. Choose one per day. The Panda Base pairs well with a Chengdu afternoon (Jinli Street, Wuhou Shrine, hot pot dinner).
When are panda cubs born?
Most births occur in July–September, with cubs visible in the nursery from late August through December. The first few weeks after birth, cubs are in incubators and visible through glass. By November–December, they are fluffy, mobile, and the most photogenic.
Why are pandas so hard to breed?
Female pandas ovulate only once per year, with a 24–72 hour fertile window. Males often show no interest (captive pandas have famously low libido). The Chengdu Base pioneered artificial insemination and panda "porn" (videos shown to pandas to encourage mating). These techniques have tripled the captive panda population since the 1990s.
