What to expect

Sichuan opera is one of China's four great opera traditions — alongside Peking, Henan and Yue opera — with roots in Sichuan and more than 300 years of history. Its singing is lovely, its humor broad, its stylized movements distinctive; the specialties audiences love most are face-changing, fire-spitting and the rolling lamp.

Face-changing is the opera's most mystifying art: performers switch painted masks in an instant, faster than the eye can follow. The secret was once a strict rule of the theater guild; today the skill is celebrated as a national treasure. In fire-spitting, the performer jets flames from the mouth in time with stage combat — genuinely thrilling.

Chengdu's best-known venues include Jinjiang Theater (the old-guard, orthodox choice), Shufeng Yayun (a lovely setting) and Furong Guocui. Before most shows come makeup sessions and prop introductions, with a chance to pose in costume; after the curtain you can meet the performers for photos.

How to get there

Jinjiang Theater — Metro Line 2 to Chunxi Road, Exit B, then 10 minutes on foot. Shufeng Yayun — Line 2 to Tonghuimen, Exit A, then 5 minutes on foot.

Best photo spots

  • The instant of a face change (photography is barred during the show — there is a curtain-call photo session)
  • Curtain-call photos with the performers
  • The costume try-on area
  • The theater's old-style facade

Tips

  • Book ahead and pick your seats early
  • A 30-minute makeup session precedes the show — arrive early
  • Some theaters offer costume photos for an extra fee
  • Very small children may not sit through it

Scams to avoid

  • Buy through official channels — beware of scalpers and fake tickets

Frequently asked questions

How does a face-changing show differ from Sichuan opera?

Face-changing is one skill within the opera. A face-changing show is a purpose-built performance showcasing the tricks — tighter and more spectacular.

Which theater is best?

Jinjiang Theater is the most storied and orthodox, Shufeng Yayun has the loveliest setting, and Furong Guocui is the best value.

Can I try the makeup before the show?

Most theaters run a pre-show makeup session, either included in the ticket or for a small extra charge.
