What to expect

Huanhua Stream runs through Qingyang District, right next to Du Fu's Thatched Cottage. The name traces to an old legend: a girl washing clothes in the stream once saw blossoms drift down from the sky into the water — hence Flower-Washing Stream. When the poet Du Fu lived in Chengdu he settled on its banks, writing immortal verses there including the Song of My Thatched Hut Wrecked by the Autumn Wind.

Huanhua Stream Park is Chengdu's most poetic city park, built around a theme of poetry. Its sights include Poetry Avenue, engraved with classical verses about the city, plus Ten Thousand Bamboo Plaza, Moonviewing Terrace and Egret Isle. Bamboo groves crowd the paths, egrets roost along the water, and little bridges cross the stream in scenes straight out of a poem.

Pair the visit with the Thatched Cottage: tour the cottage first, then stroll along the stream to the park and take in the very scene Du Fu described — two orioles singing in the green willows, a line of egrets rising to the blue sky. Early morning and dusk are the most atmospheric hours.
