What to expect
Wenshu Monastery on Wenshuyuan Street in Qingyang District dates to the Sui dynasty. Repaired through the Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing, its surviving halls are mainly Qing-era work. Facing south on a north-south axis stand the Heavenly Kings Hall, the Three Sages Hall, the Mahavira Hall and the Sutra Library.
The collections are rich — relics of the Buddha, thangkas, palm-leaf Sanskrit sutras and jade carvings among them. Ancient trees and ginkgos shade the grounds; monks chant morning and evening to the beat of drum and bell, a fine place to experience Buddhist culture.
Outside is the well-known Wenshufang food street with old brands such as Wensuyuan pastries and Yangtaipo guokui. At the monastery teahouse you can sip covered-bowl tea and taste Chengdu's slow life — rest a while after the halls and enjoy the blend of Zen and everyday bustle.
How to get there
Metro Line 1 to Wenshuyuan Station Exit K, about a 5-minute walk. Buses 16, 52, 55 and 98 stop at Wenshuyuan.
