Longmen Mountain lies within Pengzhou on Chengdu's northern fringe, the core zone of the Longmenshan National Geopark. The range forms the natural boundary between the Sichuan Basin and the western Sichuan Plateau — imposing peaks, deep gorges and an abundance of plant and animal life.
The 2008 Wenchuan earthquake devastated this area, and Bailu town stands as one of its memorial sites. Longmen Mountain has since been rebuilt, and the preserved ruins now serve as a place of remembrance for the lost and a warning for the future.
Principal sights include Yinchanggou (gorge scenery), Danjingshan (peony fields in spring), Bailu town (French-style streets plus the earthquake memorial) and Huilonggou. Summer temperatures run 5-10 degrees below Chengdu's, making this a classic retreat from the heat; in winter there is snow to see and skiing to be had.
Driving is the best option — Pengzhou is about 50 km from Chengdu via the Chengpeng Expressway, about 1.5 hours. Direct buses to Pengzhou also leave from Liangjiaxiang bus station (about 2 hours).
Yes — the gorge scenery and the earthquake memorials are educational. But there are many mountain roads, so watch younger children closely.
Two days is the better plan; one day is tight.
A jacket (the gorges are cold), sun protection and plenty of drinking water.
