What to expect

Shuangliu is the southwestern district of Chengdu, known worldwide for Chengdu Shuangliu International Airport. Its history is long — anciently called Guangdu, it ranked with Chengdu and Xindu as one of the three capitals of ancient Shu. Pengzhen, a historic market town in the district, preserves the old-Chengdu way of life and its traditional teahouse culture.

The Pengzhen Old Teahouse is Shuangliu's most celebrated — it looks much as it did last century: bamboo chairs, wooden benches, covered-bowl tea and the old "tiger stove" boiler. Local elders come daily to drink tea, chat and play mahjong, making it a superb window onto old-Chengdu life. Photographers are constant visitors.

The plane-spotting points near Shuangliu airport have become a photographer's pilgrimage in recent years — aircraft pass so close on takeoff and landing that the engine roar is deafening, and utterly thrilling. Huangjia Ma goat mutton is the local delicacy; winter is the season to try it.

How to get there

Driving or a taxi is best — Metro Line 10 does not yet reach Pengzhen. Pengzhen is about a 15-minute drive from Shuangliu airport.

Best photo spots

  • Pengzhen Old Teahouse (the tiger stove, bamboo chairs)
  • Takeoffs and landings at Shuangliu airport (pick your angle)
  • Pengzhen old street
  • Huangjia Ma goat mutton (a food shot)

Tips

  • Go to the teahouse in the morning — 09:00-11:00 has the best atmosphere
  • For plane photos, find a safe vantage point first
  • Huangjia mutton is best in winter
  • Public transport is limited; drive if you can

Scams to avoid

  • No significant scam risks; teahouse prices are clearly marked
