The Wolong Panda Reserve lies in southwestern Wenchuan county in the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture, one of the earliest-established and largest panda reserves in China. Elevations run from 1,200 to 4,000 m; the climate is humid and the bamboo forests thick — natural habitat for wild giant pandas.
Within the reserve is the China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda (also known as the Panda Garden), devoted to panda research and breeding. Open to the public, it keeps a panda kindergarten and enclosures for adult pandas, where visitors can observe the animals' daily lives at close range.
Plan a full day for Wolong; the drive from Chengdu takes 2.5-3 hours. Join a reputable tour or self-drive — the roads are generally good but twist through the mountains. The reserve also pairs well with Mount Siguniang, Dengchigou and other nearby sights.
Self-driving or a tour is best. Chengdu to Wolong is about 130 km and takes 2.5-3 hours, via the Chengguan expressway onto the Duwen expressway.
The Chengdu base has more captive pandas and easier viewing; Wolong is closer to a wild setting. Both are worth it, each in its own way.
No — shuttle buses connect the sights within the reserve.
Wild pandas are extremely rare sightings and take luck. See the captive-raised pandas at the research center instead.
