What to expect

Taiping Street sits in the Shuinianhe area of Chengdu's Jinjiang District — a well-preserved Republican-era old street about 400 metres long. Grey-brick, grey-tile timber buildings with wooden doors and windows and stilted facades line both sides, simple and elegant.

It resembles Kuanzhai Alley and Jinli in style but is far quieter, without their heavy commercial feel. Cafes, teahouses, small creative shops and inventive restaurants line the street — pick one, sit down, and enjoy the slow pace.

Nearby are the Shuinianhe relic site and the Chengdu Art Museum, and the street pairs well with the Jiuyanqiao bar strip. Come in the afternoon, find a cafe or teahouse, soak up the sun and chat — that is old Chengdu's slow rhythm.

How to get there

Metro Line 2 to Dongmendaqiao Station Exit B, then about 10 minutes south along Shuinianhe Road. Buses 4, 8, 48 and 58 stop at Hejiangting.

Tips

  • Try the small indie shops along the street
  • Pairs well with the Jiuyanqiao bar strip
  • There is parking nearby, but the metro is recommended

  • No notable scam risks
