Chengdu Museum (成都博物馆, Chéngdū Bówùguǎn)
Chengdu Museum opened its current building in 2016 — 5 floors covering the entire Sichuan arc. Floors 2–3 trace the ancient Shu civilization (Sanxingdui, Jinsha, the Three Kingdoms Shu-Han Kingdom) with bronzes, gold artifacts, and reproductions. Floor 4 is the world-class shadow puppet and folk art gallery (5,000+ pieces). Floor 5 covers modern Sichuan's role in WWII, the Long March, and reform-and-opening era Chengdu. The architecture is striking — a geometric facade inspired by ancient bronze sacrificial vessel patterns.

The shadow puppet collection alone is worth the visit — one of the world's largest, with examples from 12+ countries. The ancient Shu galleries make an excellent primer before going to Sanxingdui or Jinsha Museum. Free, well-curated, and a 10-minute walk from the giant pandas' Wenwu Gongyuan.

Different. Sanxingdui Museum is the actual site of the discovery with the real artifacts. Chengdu Museum has reproductions and context. Visit Sanxingdui if you are fascinated by the bronze masks (1.5h from Chengdu, ¥72). Visit Chengdu Museum if you have a half-day in central Chengdu and want a primer on Sichuan history.
What is the shadow puppet collection?
One of the world's largest collections of shadow puppets, with examples from 12 countries including China, Turkey, India, Indonesia, and Thailand. The Chinese collection is strongest in Sichuan/Chengdu-style puppets, with carved leather figures used in temple festivals for 2,000+ years. Each puppet takes 2–6 weeks to carve.
How do I get tickets?
Free — but you must reserve a slot via the WeChat mini-program "成都博物馆" (Chinese only — use a translator or have your hotel help). Bring your passport. Walk-in slots are sometimes available at the gate.
Is it kid-friendly?
Excellent — the shadow puppet gallery has interactive displays, the bronze galleries have touchable reproductions, and the modern Sichuan gallery has video installations. Allow 1 hour for kids 6–12, more if they are fascinated.

Dujiangyan Irrigation System

Sanxingdui Museum
Three thousand years of bronze masks with protruding eyes, a 2.62-meter standing figure, and a 4-meter sacred tree — all from a civilization that left zero written records, displayed in a 54,400 m² museum that opened July 2023 in Guanghan, 40 km north of Chengdu. Budget 3-4 hours and ¥72 (as of 2026); book ahead or you will not get in.
Wide and Narrow Alleys
Three restored Qing-dynasty courtyard alleys in central Chengdu (free, open 24/7), laid out on the grid of a 1718 Manchu garrison. Budget 2-3 hours for a slow walk plus a courtyard teahouse stop; go on a weekday after 19:00 for lit lanterns and thin crowds.
Wenshu Monastery
A free Buddhist monastery in central Chengdu, founded in the Sui dynasty (6th c.), rebuilt in 1681, and dedicated to Manjusri — the bodhisattva of wisdom. Budget 1–2 hours for the halls and a long tea in the bamboo garden.
