Wolong Giant Panda Nature Reserve (卧龙大熊猫自然保护区, Wòlóng Dàxióngmāo Zìrán Bǎohùqū)
"Wolong National Nature Reserve, 130 km west of Chengdu, is the largest and oldest panda reserve in China (established 1963). Unlike the Chengdu Panda Base (captive breeding center), Wolong is a genuine wilderness area where 150+ pandas live in the wild. The reserve was badly damaged in the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake (the original panda center was destroyed) but has since rebuilt. The volunteer program (¥700-1,000/day) lets you clean enclosures, prepare panda food, and observe pandas in a semi-wild setting.".

What to expect
Wolong is the real panda country — 200,000 hectares of bamboo forest in the Qionglai Mountains where pandas have roamed for millions of years. The reserve was devastated by the 2008 earthquake (80,000 dead across Sichuan, the original panda center destroyed) but has recovered. The new Shenshuping Panda Center, opened in 2016, is the main visitor facility. Unlike the Chengdu base, the pandas here are in a mountain setting — cooler, greener, more natural.
How to get there
Bus from Chengdu Chadianzi Bus Station to Wolong (3 hours, ¥50). Private car/DiDi: 2 hours (¥400-600). The road passes through the earthquake zone — still visibly scarred in places.
