Jinsha Site Museum (金沙遗址, Jīnshā Yízhǐ)

The Jinsha site was discovered in 2001 when construction workers building a residential complex dug into 3,000-year-old relics — the remains of a capital city of the ancient Shu civilization (the kingdom that existed in the Sichuan basin before Qin). The star finds are extraordinary: a pit containing 600 elephant tusks (the largest ivory deposit in the world), gold masks, ceremonial bronze, jade, and the site's most iconic object — the Flying God Gold Foil (太阳神鸟金箔), a 12-cm gold disc depicting a bird circling the sun that has become a national symbol of Chengdu. The museum is built directly over the excavation pits, so you walk on glass floors over the actual archaeological dig.

What to expect

The museum is divided into two parts: the excavation site (遗址馆) and the exhibition hall (文物馆). In the excavation site, you walk on glass floors over the actual pit where archaeologists found 600 elephant tusks arranged in layers — the largest deposit of ivory found anywhere in the world. The ivory is long gone (now in climate-controlled storage) but the pit itself, with its original ash layers and postholes, is preserved under glass. The scale is staggering: the pit was 30 meters long and 20 meters wide, filled with offerings.

The exhibition hall holds the objects recovered from the pit and other Jinsha graves: gold masks with exaggerated features, a bronze 'reclining cow' ritual vessel, a vast collection of jade cong and bi discs, and the Flying God Gold Foil. The gold foil is the emotional climax — a 12-centimeter disc of pure gold, 0.2 millimeters thick, depicting four birds flying clockwise around a central sun with 12 rays. It is extraordinarily delicate and completely preserved after 3,000 years.

The site challenged the traditional narrative of Chinese civilization as originating solely in the Yellow River valley — here was an equally sophisticated urban culture flourishing in the Sichuan basin contemporaneously with the Shang. The Shu script found on Jinsha artifacts is still undeciphered; the language appears unrelated to any known writing system.

Frequently asked questions

How is Jinsha different from Sanxingdui?

Sanxingdui (三星堆, Guanghan) is an earlier and larger Shu civilization site 40 km from Chengdu — its iconic mask (高达 2.6 m) and 'alien face' bronze heads are from ~1200 BCE and completely distinct from any other Chinese culture. Jinsha (金沙, Chengdu) is from ~1000–800 BCE and shows a later Shu capital; the Flying God gold foil is Jinsha's most famous piece. They are separate sites, 1–1.5 hours apart. If you have one day, choose Sanxingdui. If you have two, see both.

Is the Flying God gold foil the same as the symbol on Chengdu's metro cards?

Yes — the Flying God Gold Foil (太阳神鸟金箔) is the official emblem of Chengdu. It appears on the city flag, the metro cards, manhole covers, and souvenir shops. The original is in this museum.

What does the site tell us about ancient Shu civilization?

The Jinsha artifacts reveal a sophisticated urban society with advanced bronze casting, gold working, and ritual practices involving mass ivory sacrifices. The elephant tusks likely came from Asian elephants that lived in the Sichuan basin until the Han dynasty — the region was much more tropical 3,000 years ago. The writing system found here is undeciphered, suggesting Shu had its own script.
